At the heart of our industry leading and patented isolation product offerings is the unique Ball-N-Cone™ rolling isolation technology. Engineering and design professionals agree the most difficult task in product design is to create a simple yet functional methodology. It is much easier to add complexity and cost to a design. We believe our award-winning Ball-N-Cone™ Isolator is a great example of this “simple elegance” in both product design and function.


BNC isolators utilize two matching conical shaped load plates with a steel ball bearing sandwiched between, and are used in various forms and sizes within our entire isolation product offering.


The BNC load plates feature a gravity restoring design allowing the ball bearing to travel up the slope of the lower load plate, while the upper load plate travels over the ball effectively doubling the displacement capacity of the bearing. The designed slope of the load plate allows the bearing to use gravity as a restoring force to re-center itself when the shaking intensity decreases or stops.


The unique ability of the Ball-N-Cone™ isolator to roll back and re-center to its original location is a vitally important feature when compared to other sliding type isolators that have no restoring capability. Imagine a critical server rack on an inferior isolator moving several feet away from its original location, which would mean a loss of power and network connections.

The evolution of Ball-N-Cone™ is impressive. While our original isolator has performed successfully through thousands of earthquakes worldwide, new designs have been created to facilitate both larger displacement capacity and weight load requirements of equipment being isolated.


Introducing, NextGen Ball-N-Cone™ Isolators


After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, WorkSafe Technologies engineers realized the need to increase the displacement capacity of the original BNC to allow its use in areas of higher seismicity and acceleration. In addition, new research on rolling isolation systems helped us reshape the load plates to a new patented design that eliminates most centripetal accelerations, (which cause vertical vibrations), for even better protection of critical and sensitive equipment.


NextGen BNC Isolators are offered in two uniquely compact sizes. Our OCTO-Base™ Modular Platform System, and our AISLE-Base Isolated Containment System, each utilize 14” isolators within a 15” octagonal frame, offering a 70% increase in displacement capacity over original BNC isolators. The new heavy-duty isolator design also triples the weight load capacity of the original isolator to 2,500 lbs. while maintaining a compact 3.5” overall height.
